Renville County - Solid Waste Management Plan
We invite you to comment on the solid waste management plan (SWMP) for Renville County.
Renville County submitted a SWMP to the MPCA that proposes an integrated solid waste management system. Redwood and Renville County have entered into a joint powers agreement for solid waste management in the counties. Therefore, programs and data are combined under the Redwood-Renville Regional Solid Waste Authority (RRRSWA). The SWMP states that over the ten-year planning period of 2026-2035, RRRSWA will:
Generate approximately 32,000 tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) annually.
Reduce MSW by approximately 3.4 tons annually by separating wood pallets for reuse and by separating reusable materials at the RRRSWA transfer facility and donating them to the Westside Reuse Store.
Educate residents about proper solid waste management via newspaper articles, social media, websites, and booths at various events.
Achieve a 43% recycling rate (approximately 13,500 tons) by providing curbside single-sort collection in incorporated areas and 28 drop sites across the counties for rural residents.
MSW that is not reduced, reused, or recycled (approximately 19,000 tons) will be managed at the Lyon County Landfill near Balaton, Minnesota, and the Nobles County Landfill near Rushmore, Minnesota.
Problem materials such as tires, electronics, appliances, household hazardous waste, and automotive fluids will be collected at the RRRSWA transfer facility, the Redwood County Household Hazardous Waste Facility, the Renville County Household Hazardous Waste Facility, private businesses, and via special collections.
Minnesota counties and solid waste management districts outside the seven-county metro area are required to prepare and implement detailed solid waste management plans every 10 years. Visit our website for more information about Solid waste management plans.
