Murray County - Solid Waste Management Plan

We invite you to comment on the solid waste management plan (SWMP) for Murray County.


Murray County submitted a SWMP to the MPCA that proposes an integrated solid waste management system. The SWMP states that over the ten-year planning period of 2026-2035, Murray County will:

  • Generate approximately 8,000 tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) annually.
  • Reduce MSW by approximately 0.8 tons annually by supporting the annual rummage sale hosted by the Hospice Program at the Murray County Fairgrounds.
  • Educate residents about proper solid waste management via newspaper articles, social media, websites, and booths at various events.
  • Achieve a 37% recycling rate (approximately 3,000 tons) by providing curbside source separated collection in incorporated areas and 11 drop sites across the county for rural residents.
  • The MSW that is not reduced, reused, or recycled (approximately 4,600 tons) will be managed at the Nobles County Landfill near Rushmore, Minnesota.
  • Problem materials such as tires, electronics, appliances, household hazardous waste, and automotive fluids will be collected at the Murray County Recycling Facility, private businesses, and via special collections.
