Nobles County - Solid Waste Management Plan

We invite you to comment on the solid waste management plan for Nobles County.


Nobles County submitted a SWMP to the MPCA that proposes an integrated solid waste management system. The SWMP states that over the ten-year planning period of 2026-2035, Nobles County will:
  • Generate approximately 20,500 tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) annually.
  • Reduce MSW by approximately 1.5 tons annually by continuing to operate a product exchange at the Nobles County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility.
  • Educate residents about proper solid waste management via newspaper articles, social media, websites, and booths at various events.
  • Achieve a 41% recycling rate (approximately 8,500 tons) by providing curbside source separated collection in incorporated areas and 11 drop sites across the county for rural residents.
  • The MSW that is not reduced, reused, or recycled (approximately 11,800 tons) will be managed at the Nobles County Landfill near Rushmore, Minnesota.
  • Problem materials such as tires, electronics, appliances, household hazardous waste, and automotive fluids will be collected at the Nobles County HHW Facility, private businesses, and via special collections.
