Lincoln County - Solid Waste Management Plan

We invite you to comment on the solid waste management plan (SWMP) for Lincoln County.


Lincoln County submitted a SWMP to the MPCA that proposes an integrated solid waste management system. The SWMP states that over the ten-year planning period of 2026-2035, Lincoln County will:

  • Generate approximately 6,500 tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) annually.
  • Reduce MSW by approximately 10-20 tons annually by operating a Reuse program in the Reuse Building located at the Lincoln County Transfer Station site.
  • Educate residents about proper solid waste management via newspaper articles, social media, websites, and booths at various events.
  • Achieve a 50% recycling rate (approximately 3,200 tons) by providing curbside single-sort collection in incorporated areas and 11 drop sites across the county for rural residents.
  • The MSW that is not reduced, reused, or recycled (approximately 3,200 tons) will be managed at the Dickinson County Landfill near Spirit Lake, Iowa, the Nobles County Landfill near Rushmore, Minnesota, and the Cottonwood County Landfill near Windom, Minnesota.
  • Problem materials such as tires, electronics, appliances, household hazardous waste, and automotive fluids will be collected at the Lincoln County Transfer Station, private businesses, and via special collections.
