Wabasha Barge Terminal - Wastewater Permit
We invite you to comment on the draft wastewater permit for the Wabasha Barge Terminal.
The city of Wabasha is proposing the construction of a new barge facility, which will have a steel sheet pile placed along river mile 760 of the Mississippi River. Portions of the riverbed will be dredged to help navigate to the access point. The project will initially require the dredging of no more than 40,000 cubic yards of silt and sediment material. In addition, annual maintenance dredging to ensure access will be necessary, with no more than 2,000 cubic yards of material annually.
Dredged material will be dewatered on-site at the project site. Once complete, the material will be used to fill and construct the barge roadway and handling area. Any excess material will be stored at another location managed by the city of Wabasha in accordance with applicable laws.
Wastewater from industrial and commercial sources may contain pollutants at levels that could adversely affect the water quality in area wetlands, streams, rivers, and lakes. Water quality permits - or National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits - establish specific limits and requirements to protect Minnesota's surface and groundwater quality. All wastewater must be treated before it goes into surface water to protect human health and aquatic life. Permits are regularly reviewed and updated as they expire, allowing the MPCA to incorporate new information about the impacts of pollutants on the environment in future permits.
