American Peat Technology LLC - Wastewater Permit
We invite you to comment on the draft wastewater permit for American Peat Technology LLC.
American Peat Technology LLC applied for the reissuance of its water quality permit. This facility harvests peat to produce granular products for agriculture and water treatment. Wastewater from this facility is created during the harvest and processing of peat. After treatment, this facility discharges wastewater to two private ditches. The facility is designed to treat a maximum of 2.98 million gallons per day.
This draft permit includes new monitoring requirements for nitrite plus nitrate, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total nitrogen, and sulfate. The nitrogen series was added because of state nutrient reduction goals. Sulfate was added because discharge from this facility can potentially reach water listed as impaired for sulfate.
Wastewater from industrial and commercial sources may contain pollutants at levels that could adversely affect the water quality in area wetlands, streams, rivers, and lakes. Water quality permits - or National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits - establish specific limits and requirements to protect Minnesota's surface and groundwater quality. All wastewater must be treated before it goes into surface water to protect human health and aquatic life. Permits are regularly reviewed and updated as they expire, allowing the MPCA to incorporate new information about the impacts of pollutants on the environment in future permits.
