Lyon County - Solid Waste Management Plan
We invite you to comment on the solid waste management plan for Lyon County.
Lyon County submitted a Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) to the MPCA that proposes an integrated solid waste management system. The SWMP states that over the ten-year planning period of 2026-2035, Lyon County will:
Generate approximately 28,000 tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) annually.
Reduce MSW by approximately 3.5 tons annually by assisting to establish a free store at Southwest Minnesota State University and assisting the library system to develop a tool lending library.
Educate residents about proper solid waste management via newspaper articles, social media, websites, and booths at various events.
Achieve a 35% recycling rate (approximately 10,000 tons) by providing curbside single-sort collection in incorporated areas and 15 drop sites across the county for rural residents.
The MSW that is not reduced, reused, or recycled (approximately 18,000 tons) will be managed at the Lyon County Landfill near Balaton, MN.
Problem materials such as tires, electronics, appliances, household hazardous waste, and automotive fluids will be collected at the Lyon County Landfill, the Lyon County Household Hazardous Waste Facility, private businesses, and via special collections.
