We invite you to comment on the draft Mississippi River-St. Cloud Watershed reports.
Overall, significant progress in surface water quality has occurred within the Mississippi River-St. Cloud Watershed over the past decade. This is supported statistically through improvements in aquatic life communities in streams, positive water quality trends on 17 lakes, and eight delistings from Minnesota’s impaired waters list. However, ongoing problems and challenges such as loss of shoreland habitat due to development, excess nutrients, elevated levels of bacteria, and low dissolved oxygen levels continue to exist and expand in some areas of the watershed.
The MPCA has prepared two significant reports that will help direct future reservation restoration work. The first report, a total maximum daily load study, establishes the amount of each pollutant that a water body can accept while meeting water quality standards or the reductions needed to meet the standards. The second report, a watershed restoration and protection strategy update, uses total maximum daily load reports, monitoring results, and other information to develop strategies for restoring polluted waters and protecting healthy ones.
An informational meeting about the watershed reports will take place on Thursday, May 23, from 9-11 a.m. This virtual meeting is open to the public and will be hosted via Webex. Please visit the watershed web page at www.pca.state.mn.us/watershed-information/mississippi-river-st-cloud for more information and instructions on how to participate.
