Nine Mile Creek Corridor Renewal Project - 401 Water Quality Certification
We invite you to comment on the draft 401 Water Quality Certification for the Nine Mile Creek Corridor Renewal project in Hennepin County.
A large rain event in the 1980’s cut off a meander in Nine Mile Creek, straightening a portion of the stream channel. The city of Bloomington is proposing to restore the meander and fix an eroded stream bank further upstream as a part of a large-scale improvement project. 240 linear feet of streambank will be stabilized via anchored toewood, erosion control blankets and native vegetation planting. A slight channel re-alignment away from the eroded streambank will occur to prevent future erosion. Approximately 450 linear feet of existing stream channel will be filled and 900 linear feet of meandered channel created. Several cross vanes will be installed in the new meander to reduce future erosion. Floodplain benches will also be created in the meander area.
A 401 Water Quality Certification is required when an individual, business, or property owner proposes construction-related activities near a navigable lake, river, stream, or adjacent wetland. The MPCA reviews projects to ensure they will not violate Minnesota's more protective water quality standards. The 401 certification becomes an enforceable component of the associated federal license or permits issued under the Clean Water Act.
