Lac qui Parle County - Solid Waste Management Plan

We invite you to comment on the solid waste management plan for Lac qui Parle County.


Lac qui Parle County submitted a SWMP to the MPCA that proposes an integrated solid waste management system. The SWMP states that over the ten-year planning period of 2026-2035, Lac qui Parle County will:
  • Generate approximately 8,800 tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) annually.
  • Reduce MSW by approximately 5.4 tons annually by encouraging reuse by supporting thrift stores and city-wide rummage sales. The county will also host fix-it clinics.
  • Educate residents about proper solid waste management via newspaper articles, social media, websites, and booths at various events.
  • Achieve a 51% recycling rate (approximately 3,700 tons) by providing curbside sorted collection in incorporated areas and drop sites across the county for rural residents.
  • The MSW that is not reduced, reused, or recycled (approximately 4,200 tons) will be managed at the Lyon County Landfill near Balaton, Minnesota, and Spruce Ridge Landfill near Hutchinson, Minnesota.
  • Problem materials such as tires, electronics, appliances, household hazardous waste, and automotive fluids will be collected at the Lac qui Parle County Special Item Recycling Site, private businesses, and via special collections.
