Interagency fish kill response guidance document and protocol
We invite you to comment on the draft interagency fish kill response guidance document and protocol.
To best unify state agency responses to fish kills in the state, the MPCA coordinated an interagency team consisting of the Department of Natural Resources, Department of Health, Department of Agriculture, and the MPCA to create interagency communications protocols and field response considerations.
Under the draft protocol, the MPCA will lead the response when the fish kill results from the release of hazardous substances, the Department of Agriculture will lead the response when the fish kill results from pesticide and fertilizer incidents, and the Department of Natural Resources will lead the response to all non-urgent fish kills. The Department of Natural Resources will also serve a supporting role when any pollutant discharge causes injury to other wildlife or damage to public lands. Agencies will coordinate with the Department of Health when a fish kill presents a threat to public health and safety.
All fish kill notices and investigation reports will appear in the Environmental Quality Board’s Monitor.
A public meeting to provide an overview of the document will be held via Webex on April 16, 2024, at 10:00 a.m.
