Martin Marietta Materials (St. Cloud) - Wastewater Permit
We invite you to comment on the draft wastewater permit for Martin Marietta Materials in St. Cloud.
Martin Marietta Materials quarries and processes granite for the production of ballast, road stone, aggregate, and other uses in St. Cloud. Wastewater produced by washing the granite during processing collects with stormwater and groundwater in the facility’s settling basin, from which the facility discharges the treated wastewater to the Sauk River at an average rate of 2.94 million gallons per day and a maximum rate of 7.92 million gallons per day.
The draft water quality permit includes existing permit limits and a new limit for total phosphorus of 405 kilograms per year. The draft permit also adds described nuisance conditions, turbidity monitoring, and new requirements for the pollution prevention plan. The changes were made to protect the Sauk River.
Wastewater from industrial and commercial sources may contain pollutants at levels that could adversely affect the water quality in area wetlands, streams, rivers, and lakes. Water quality permits - or National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits - establish specific limits and requirements to protect Minnesota's surface and groundwater quality. All wastewater must be treated before it goes into surface water to protect human health and aquatic life. Permits are regularly reviewed and updated as they expire, allowing the MPCA to incorporate new information about the impacts of pollutants on the environment in future permits.
