POET Biorefining (Lake Crystal) - Air Permit
We invite you to comment on the draft air quality permit for POET Biorefining in Lake Crystal.
POET Biorefining operates a facility in Lake Crystal where it receives, handles, and mills grain and then ferments the grain to produce fuel-grade ethanol. Coproducts of ethanol production at this facility include dried distillers’ grains, wetcake, and corn oil.
The draft air permit reissues the facility's operating permit. The permit relaxes limits on operating hours for the facility’s three generators; imposes more restrictive limits on the facility’s hammermilling, grain handling, and fermentation processes; and increases monitoring of the facility’s grain handling processes. These changes will allow increased operation of the generators and reconfiguration of the hammermill emission stacks.
An air quality operating permit is required for certain existing facilities or the construction of new facilities that have the potential to emit a significant level of any regulated pollutant. The permit includes all requirements for operation and procedures, applicable rules, emission standards, monitoring, recordkeeping, and reporting. If additional conditions change and modifications are necessary, the MPCA may review and amend the permit.
