Swift Pork Company (Worthington Industrial WWTF) - Wastewater Permit
We invite you to comment on the draft wastewater permit for Swift Pork Company.
The Swift Pork Company has applied for a permit modification. This modification changes the ownership of the Worthington Industrial Wastewater Treatment Facility from the City of Worthington to Swift Pork Company. The facility treats wastewater from a meat processing facility and discharges to Okabena Creek. The facility is designed to treat 2.21 million gallons per day.
The draft permit modification adds limits for total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, oil and grease, total biological oxygen demand, and fecal coliform. The permit contains a schedule to comply with the new limits.
The draft permit also includes a construction schedule for Swift Pork Company’s proposal to construct an upgraded treatment facility.
Under Swift Pork Company ownership, the facility’s land application of solids will be regulated as industrial by-products instead of biosolids.
Wastewater from industrial and commercial sources may contain pollutants at levels that could adversely affect the water quality in area wetlands, streams, rivers, and lakes. Water quality permits - or National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits - establish specific limits and requirements to protect Minnesota's surface and groundwater quality. All wastewater must be treated before it goes into surface water to protect human health and aquatic life. Permits are regularly reviewed and updated as they expire, allowing the MPCA to incorporate new information about the impacts of pollutants on the environment in future permits.
