ConAgra Foods (Waseca) - Wastewater Permit
We invite you to comment on the draft wastewater permit for the ConAgra Foods in Waseca.
ConAgra Foods operates a vegetable processing plant located in Waseca.
The facility treats its process wastewater, stormwater that contacts vegetables, cooling water, and reject water from reverse osmosis in a series of four wastewater ponds prior to spray irrigation on five fields. The facility also land applies industrial by-products generated during vegetable processing and the process wastewater treatment. Sanitary wastewater from the facility discharges to the City of Waseca’s wastewater treatment facility while other stormwater discharges on ConAgra properties. There is no discharge of process wastewater to surface water.
The draft wastewater permit modification includes changes such as updated stormwater sampling locations that reflect the relocation of the facility’s processing plant closer to its wastewater treatment facility. The facility has also proposed a new spray irrigation site, which will include new wells and monitoring locations.
Wastewater from industrial and commercial sources may contain pollutants at levels that could adversely affect the water quality in area wetlands, streams, rivers, and lakes. Water quality permits - or National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits - establish specific limits and requirements to protect Minnesota's surface and groundwater quality. All wastewater must be treated before it goes into surface water to protect human health and aquatic life. Permits are regularly reviewed and updated as they expire, allowing the MPCA to incorporate new information about the impacts of pollutants on the environment in future permits.
